Antalya's beach-resort credentials are about to get an interstellar upgrade. Between 5 and 9 October 2026, the Mediterranean city hosts the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) — the first time the event has ever been staged in Türkiye.

The congress, organised by the International Astronautical Federation and hosted by the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) with co-host SAHA Istanbul, runs under the theme "The World Needs More Space." Beyond the headline numbers, organisers are framing it as a coming-out party for Turkish industry: SAHA Istanbul's secretary-general Muttalip Tütüncü told Daily Sabah the goal is to connect Turkish companies, universities and researchers directly with global space agencies, contractors and investors.

Timing matters. Türkiye signed the Artemis Accords on 31 August 2026, and the accords' 5th Annual High-Level Meeting will take place during the congress — a genuine diplomatic milestone tucked into a busy conference week. The country's broader space ambitions are also accelerating: TÜBITAK UZAY is building a lunar spacecraft with more than 80% domestic content under the Lunar Research Program, with launch targeted for the first half of 2027. Experience from satellite programmes like IMECE and Türksat 6A is feeding directly into that effort.

Tütüncü argues the real opportunity lies in supply chains rather than headline missions — electronics, software, sensors, precision manufacturing and testing, areas where Turkish defence and aerospace firms already operate. Expect the congress to function as a matchmaking floor for exactly those niche suppliers.

For travellers, the practical read is simple: early October is one of Antalya's most pleasant windows, and a city that usually markets sun and sea will spend a week buzzing with astronauts, engineers and space-agency delegations. Public events, exhibitions and side meetings around major congresses often spill beyond the venue, so even casual visitors may catch something. If you're already in Antalya that week — or were considering a shoulder-season trip — it's an unusually good moment to be there. Anyone hoping to attend the congress itself will need to register through official IAC channels well in advance.

Hotels around the Antalya Expo area and the city centre will be busy with delegates, so booking early for that week is wise. Otherwise, expect the usual October perks: warm sea, thinner crowds and lower prices than the summer peak.
