A three-day exhibition in Cairo is asking a simple question: what happens when artists create with empathy? Art With A Heart, running September 20–22 at Bibliothek Art Gallery, gathers donated works from multiple artists, with proceeds supporting Alwan wa Awtar, a community organisation that has spent two decades using creativity to change children's lives.
Bibliothek, founded and owned by Noha Barakat, has built the show around the idea that art should do more than decorate a wall. Co-curator Noha Roushdy describes the premise as artists using their talent to support others and be part of the community — and she says the process changed her own view of art, shifting it from something purely visual to, in her words, an active tool for social change.
The beneficiary is worth knowing about in its own right. Alwan wa Awtar was founded in 2005 by Azza Kamel and offers children a safe space to explore art, handicrafts, literature, languages and technology through after-school programmes. Beyond the classroom, it provides psychosocial support to help young people build self-worth, and it has extended its handicraft programmes to mothers, making it a family-level intervention rather than a drop-in activity.
The exhibition's curators frame the cause in terms of ripple effects. Roushdy says she has watched art build children's confidence and turn them into adults who give back to their communities — one empowered child, she argues, changes the family and everyone around them. Visitors, she hopes, will leave feeling connected to that mission and aware that buying a donated work directly funds it.
