The Capital One Venture X has quietly become one of the most talked-about premium travel cards, largely because it undercuts its big-name rivals. At $395 a year, it costs less than the Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve, yet still packs in a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, airport lounge access and 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary.
A frequent question from current cardholders: can you apply if you already hold the standard Venture Rewards card? Yes — and this is where it gets interesting. Capital One's 48-month welcome bonus restriction only runs one way. If you got the Venture X bonus recently, you can't earn a bonus on the cheaper Venture cards for four years. But the reverse doesn't apply, so an existing Venture Rewards holder can still apply for the Venture X and pocket the current offer of 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months. That makes applying as a new cardholder usually more rewarding than upgrading, since upgrades don't typically come with a welcome bonus (though they're gentler on your credit score).
Capital One also has quirks worth planning around. The bank generally limits applicants to one new card every six months and is wary of recent credit inquiries. And since the Venture X counts toward Chase's 5/24 rule, travellers eyeing a Sapphire card may want to apply with Chase first.
On the perks side, the card carries Visa Infinite protections: up to $3,000 in lost luggage reimbursement, primary rental car coverage, $2,000 per person in trip cancellation insurance, and $500 per person for expenses when a flight is delayed overnight or six-plus hours. Shoppers get cellphone protection up to $800 per claim (just pay your monthly wireless bill with the card), purchase protection, extended warranties and return protection. Cardholders also get complimentary Hertz President's Circle status — but you must enroll through Capital One's portal; simply having the card isn't enough.
Families should note the authorized user math. You can add up to four users free, and they inherit the same travel and shopping protections plus Hertz status. Lounge access, though, costs $125 per person per year for authorized users, and they don't get their own travel credit or anniversary miles.
Finally, Capital One miles are flexible: you can combine miles across cards and even convert cash back from eligible cards like Savor into miles ($100 of cash back becomes 10,000 miles) via the 'Move Rewards' tool in your account.
For frequent flyers weighing a premium card, the takeaway is straightforward: the Venture X delivers most of the flagship perks for a lower fee, and the application rules reward a bit of strategy — especially if there's an existing Capital One card in your wallet.
