Citi ThankYou has added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a transfer partner, and it might be the most interesting airline addition to the program in a while. Transfers are live now, and to mark the launch Citi is running a 30% bonus through October 24, 2026.
Here's how the mechanics work. If you hold a Citi card with an annual fee — think the Strata Premier or Strata Elite — points move to JAL at 1:1. No-annual-fee ThankYou cards transfer at a weaker 1:0.7. With the bonus layered on top, every 1,000 Citi points from a premium card becomes 1,300 JAL miles. One caveat: transfers are one-way, so don't move points without a redemption actually in mind.
Why bother with JAL's program at all? It has a few quirks that work in your favour. Japan Airlines releases the same saver award space to its own members as it does to partner programs, and Mileage Bank members get access to extra award buckets priced slightly higher but with far better availability. Better still, you can book 360 days out, right when the schedule opens — and JAL reliably releases first and business class seats at that moment. For anyone chasing the airline's famous first class to Tokyo, booking at the 360-day mark through Mileage Bank is a genuine edge.
The program also shines beyond JAL's own flights. There's a distance-based business class chart covering other airlines, including non-oneworld partners like Emirates and Air France, plus a oneworld chart for itineraries on two or more oneworld carriers that allows multiple stopovers. If you like building multi-stop trips, that's worth a look.
It's not all smooth sailing, though. Mileage Bank has an unusual rule: you can only redeem miles for family members related by blood or marriage. You can't book a flight for a friend, which trips up plenty of people used to more flexible programs. Read the fine print before you transfer.
JAL is also now reachable from other bank points: Bilt transfers at 1:1 and Capital One at 4:3, so if you don't hold Citi points, you have options. But the Citi link plus the 30% bonus currently offers the best ratio on the board.
For travellers, the practical play is this: if you've been eyeing JAL first or business class — or a smartly priced oneworld award with stopovers — this bonus window is the cheapest point conversion to that goal we've seen. Check award space for your dates first, confirm who you're booking for complies with the family rule, then transfer only what you need. For everyone else, Citi ThankYou points remain flexible, so there's no pressure to move them speculatively.
