Manta, Ecuador's main cruise port on the Pacific coast, has welcomed its first luxury caller of the season — and it won't be the last this winter. The Crystal Symphony, a 606-passenger ship, opened the port's 2026-27 cruise season, the first of 16 ships expected to call there in the coming months.
The Symphony is in the middle of a big one: a 32-night sailing from San Diego to New York City focused on the Panama Canal and the Americas. Having left California in late August, it worked down through Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica before stopping in Ecuador. From there the itinerary continues through Panama and the Caribbean before finishing in New York later in September.
Manta's winter lineup is impressively varied for a port of its size. Holland America Line, Oceania Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Phoenix Reisen all have calls scheduled. Specific ships on the list include the Oosterdam, Insignia, Europa and Seven Seas Mariner.
The biggest visitor will be the Carnival Firenze, a 4,232-passenger ship repositioning from the West Coast to Miami and New York as part of a 15-night South America cruise. It's due in Manta on a single call on January 12, 2027. A few days later, the Crystal Serenity arrives as part of Crystal's 2027 World Cruise — a 139-night odyssey from San Diego to Vancouver taking in South America, Australia, French Polynesia, Southeast Asia, the Far East and Alaska.
The local port authority credits Manta's location, natural conditions and multipurpose facilities for keeping it on cruise itineraries, and it clearly intends to stay competitive as a stop on the long repositioning routes that link the US West Coast with South America and beyond.
For cruise travellers, this matters in two ways. First, if you've been eyeing a longer Panama Canal or South America repositioning cruise — often some of the best value-per-night fares at sea — Manta is a stop worth noting, giving you access to Ecuador's Pacific coast without flying in. Second, the range of lines calling here spans from mass-market Carnival to ultra-luxury Regent and Crystal, so there's a way to do coastal Ecuador at almost any cruise budget. The season's concentration of calls runs through the northern winter, peaking with the Carnival Firenze and Crystal Serenity in January 2027 — a good window to target if you want warm-weather cruising when home is cold.
Cruise calls at Manta typically feed shore trips to Montecristi, home of the original Panama hat, and to Ecuador's coastal nature reserves — with Quito or the Galápagos within reach for travellers extending their stay.
