Skip the Orlando queues and eye-watering prices for a moment. About 30 miles southeast of San Jose, on the edge of the garlic capital of the world, sits Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park — a 536-acre blend of coasters, water play and genuinely impressive horticulture that has been quietly pleasing families since 2001.
The park started life as Bonfante Gardens, founded by local businessman Michael Bonfante, who was as passionate about trees as he was about rides. That shows. Beyond the 40 attractions, you'll find six separate garden spaces, including areas devoted to camellias and holly, plus a greenhouse where Monarch butterflies flutter about. The park's quirkiest claim to fame is its Circus Trees — grafts created by Swedish immigrant Axel Erlandson in the 1920s in the Santa Cruz Mountains, then relocated here when the park opened. There's even a South County Backroads Garden where you can drive miniature 1920s roadsters and 1950s sports cars.

The Quicksilver Express Mine Coaster, themed on the historic mercury mines of nearby Almaden, zips through a grove of trees. The Timber Twister is shaped like a rattlesnake, and the Garlic Twirl spins you inside a giant garlic bulb — fitting, given the town's famous crop. Add boat rides, a monorail, a forest-themed playground and water play areas for hot days, and it's an easy full-day outing for families with small kids.
Getting there is simple: Mineta San José International Airport is roughly 40 minutes away by car, and San Francisco International is about 70 miles. The park also makes a handy base for a wider central California loop — Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea are all within easy reach.
Gilroy itself deserves more than a drive-through. The Santa Clara Valley around town has vineyards and redwood-shaded hiking trails over gentle hills, and the city runs a Mural & Art Trail showcasing bold street art. Nearby Casa de Fruta began as a roadside produce stand and now includes a restaurant USA Today named the best place for pie in California, plus a carousel, miniature train and turtle pond. If the trampoline-loving crew needs more, Sky Zone in town offers dodgeball, arcade games and a gladiator-style joust.
For families priced out of the big Florida parks, or anyone who wants theme park fun with actual shade and scenery, Gilroy Gardens is a smart pick. It's small enough to navigate with toddlers, distinctive enough for garden lovers, and close enough to the Bay Area to combine with a longer California trip. The retro, unpolished charm is part of the appeal — this is a park built with genuine care rather than franchise branding.
