Hobbit Austin, a Lord of the Rings-themed attraction in Johor Bahru's Mount Austin neighbourhood, is newly opened and already drawing crowds with its hillside hobbit holes, fairy-lit gardens and – once the sun goes down – live bands and street food.
The pitch for Singaporeans is simple: instead of a 12-hour flight to the real Hobbiton in New Zealand, it's roughly 35 minutes from Woodlands Checkpoint. Entry is free, and by day the place works as a photo spot – think doors built into a grassy slope, garden paths and woodland-creature touches that could pass for a film set, minus the temperate Kiwi weather. It's pet-friendly too, so expect to share the Shire with a few dogs.
After dark, the vibe shifts entirely. Fairy lights switch on, food stalls open, and live bands play from 8pm to 11pm every night. The food lineup spotted so far includes bak kut teh, waffles, Chinese skewers (chuan chuan), coffee, bingsu and punch lemon tea. Seating comes in two flavours: air-conditioned indoor tables or camping chairs outside under the lights, with big fans keeping outdoor sitters comfortable.
Getting there is straightforward by car – under 25 minutes from JB's CIQ complex, traffic permitting. Bus option: service J11 from JB Sentral to Opp Petron Jalan Daya, then a 15-minute walk, though that route takes around 1.5 hours in total. Most visitors will find a licensed taxi from Singapore, or the KTM shuttle plus a local Grab, the easier call.
One caveat: Hobbit Austin is still in its soft-launch phase, so hours, stall lineups and entertainment schedules may shift as things settle. It opens daily from 12pm to 12am at Lot PTD 58061, Jalan Mutiara Emas 8, Taman Mount Austin.
