A favourite in Austria's Radstädter Tauern mountains is back. Hotel Lürzerhof in Untertauern has reopened after a €10 million expansion — the biggest project in the resort's history — and the headline act is a 900m² adults-only wellness floor perched on the new fifth storey, crowned by a 20-metre cantilevered infinity pool that appears to hover over the alpine scenery.
The expansion, designed by Salzburg interior architects Köck + Bachler, adds two entire floors. Down on the fourth, six new luxury suites plus two rooms bring the resort to 68 keys. The look is contemporary alpine: floor-to-ceiling glass framing the mountains, generous terraces and spa-style bathrooms. The pick of the bunch are the Sky Suites, which come with private panorama saunas, outdoor whirlpools and their own wellness spaces.
One floor up, things go strictly grown-ups-only. Alongside that showstopping pool, the new wellness level has a Finnish Panorama Sauna, an Organic Panorama Sauna, an Infrared Salt Dome, an aroma steam bath, two panoramic relaxation rooms and a tea lounge, all arranged around a light-flooded glass atrium. The existing spa has had a refresh too, with a redesigned reception and lounge, two extra treatment rooms and new signature rituals — taking total spa space at the hotel to 4,500m².
There's a sustainability story worth knowing here as well. Lürzerhof describes itself as climate-positive: it generates more than ten times its own energy needs via a private hydroelectric plant, heats with biomass and runs entirely without fossil fuels. The new build keeps that ethos, adding green roofs, energy-efficient glazing and low-impact materials.
Owner Christina Habersatter says the mountains were deliberately made central to the design — whether you're in the rooftop pool, a panorama sauna or a Sky Suite terrace, the views are always in front of you — while insisting the hotel's warmth and personal service haven't changed despite the scale of the works.
Why it matters: if an adults-only alpine spa break is on your list, this puts one of Salzburg's wellness strongholds firmly back in play, with serious new rooms and a rooftop pool that few hotels in the region can match.
