Forget the Florida clichés. When Penske crunched the numbers on one-way consumer truck rentals for 2025, the single most popular destination in America was Houston, Texas — and it wasn't even close to a first-time win. The city has now held the top spot for five consecutive years.
Penske published its annual Top Moving Destinations list in May 2026, built from reservations made through its website and call centres across more than 1,800 rental locations in North America. Atlanta, Georgia came second, with Texas claiming another place on the podium thanks to San Antonio in third. Orlando was Florida's best-performing city — all the way down in sixth. It's worth remembering the data reflects Penske customers specifically rather than all US relocation, but a five-year streak is hard to argue with.
So what's pulling people in? Penske's own national moving survey offers a hint: most Gen X, Millennial and Gen Z respondents said they were chasing a fresh start, while Boomers prioritised being closer to family and friends. Kevin Malloy, Penske's senior vice president of rental, summed up the pattern as movers gravitating toward cities offering affordability, community, cultural vibrancy and the chance to begin again.
Houston delivers on those fronts. The Museum District packs in heavyweights like the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Natural Science and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, with the 445-acre Hermann Park next door offering gardens, trails and McGovern Lake. The Theater District covers ballet, opera and live drama, giving the city an arts calendar that punches well above the typical Southern metropolis.
Outdoors types have Buffalo Bayou Park, 160 acres along the water with trails, gardens, public art and kayak and boat rentals. And then there's the eating. Houston's international population has built one of the most varied food scenes in the country — Texas barbecue and Southern cooking share the table with Vietnamese, Mexican, Chinese, Nigerian, Indian and Pakistani food, among much else.
For travellers, the takeaway is simple: a city that thousands of Americans keep voting for with moving trucks is worth a proper visit before you even think about joining them. Houston works well as a food-and-culture city break, and a short trip is the easiest way to test whether a place you might move to actually suits you.
