A lounge in a terminal better known for budget carriers has just been crowned the finest on the planet. At the 2026 World Airline Awards, Skytrax revealed its ranking of the world's 20 best independent airport lounges, based on votes from travellers worldwide, and the Chase Sapphire Lounge at New York LaGuardia took first place.

Rome came closest to beating it. The Plaza Premium Lounge at Fiumicino Airport ranked second overall, making it the best in Europe. Heathrow wasn't far behind either — the Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 4 landed fourth overall and was the only other European entry in the top 10.

Further down the list, Europe still does well for itself. Vienna's own Vienna Lounge at Vienna International came in 12th, Istanbul Airport's iGA Lounge took 17th, and Munich's Airport Lounge World in Terminal 1 rounded out the European entries at 18th. So if you're flying through any of those hubs, there's a genuinely well-rated spot to wait out your connection.

The night belonged to one company overall. Plaza Premium Group placed three lounges in the top 20 — Fiumicino, Heathrow T4 and Dubai International — and was named the world's best airport lounge group for the tenth year running. Founder and CEO Song Hoi See credited the milestone to the group's early bet on independent lounges, a concept it pioneered 28 years ago with the aim of improving how people spend time between flights.

The full top 20 skews heavily American and Asian. Chase Sapphire has three entries (LaGuardia, Hong Kong, Philadelphia), American Express Centurion also lands three (JFK, LaGuardia, Haneda), and Capital One scores with JFK and Washington Dulles. Bangkok's Coral Cosmo Lounge, Bahrain's The Pearl, Muscat's Primeclass Lounge, Bengaluru's 080 Lounge and Auckland's Strata Lounge fill out a genuinely global list.

Why should a regular traveller care? Because "best lounge" lists like this one are usually dominated by airline-specific or credit-card-gated spaces, while these are independent lounges — the kind most of us can actually book, whether through a lounge membership, a priority pass, a credit card perk, or a one-off walk-in fee. Knowing that Fiumicino, Heathrow T4, Vienna, Istanbul and Munich all have award-recognised independent lounges gives you a concrete upgrade option on your next European connection, without needing elite status or a business-class ticket.

The rankings come from Skytrax's passenger satisfaction survey, which asks travellers to rate facilities and staff hospitality — so this is crowd-sourced opinion, not a judging panel. Worth bearing in mind either way: a top-20 slot suggests a lounge that consistently delivers on food, comfort and service, which is exactly what you want before a long-haul flight.
