The best airport lounge on the planet right now isn't in Dubai or Singapore — it's in Queens. The Chase Sapphire Lounge at New York LaGuardia topped Skytrax's 2026 lounge ranking, announced at the World Airline Awards, and it's a good excuse to rethink how you spend a layover.

The ranking is based on traveller votes covering facilities and staff hospitality, and here's the interesting part: it's a list of independent lounges, not airline ones. That means access usually comes via a credit card, a membership or simply paying at the door — no business class ticket required. Several of them are open to any passenger flying any airline.

LaGuardia's winner spans two floors and leans hard into wellness and local flavour. There's a seasonal menu of New York dishes, craft cocktails from its Apotheke bar, complimentary 30-minute facials and bookable guided meditation sessions between flights.

The rest of the top ten is unusually global. Rome Fiumicino's Plaza Premium Lounge took second place, mixing Italian design with live cooking stations and showers. Hong Kong's Chase Sapphire Lounge came third, and London Heathrow's Terminal 4 Plaza Premium Lounge fourth — it has a complimentary buffet, self-service bar, quiet zone and showers.

New York dominated overall with three entries. At JFK, Capital One's lounge (fifth) runs around the clock with private shower suites and a bodega-style bagel bar, while the two-storey Amex Centurion Lounge (sixth) hides a speakeasy behind its two premium bars and full coffee bar. Bangkok's Coral Cosmo Lounge at Suvarnabhumi came seventh, followed by The Pearl in Bahrain, the Primeclass Lounge in Muscat and Plaza Premium at Dubai in tenth.

Plaza Premium Group also took the prize for best lounge group for the tenth year running, ahead of TAV Primeclass and Chase Sapphire. Deeper in the top 20, Vienna's lounge ranked 12th, Istanbul's iGA Lounge 17th and Munich's Airport Lounge World 18th.

For travellers, the takeaway is practical: if you hold a premium credit card like Chase Sapphire Reserve, Capital One Venture X or Amex Platinum, you may already have access to some of the world's best lounges without realising it. And if you don't, most Plaza Premium locations can be booked online for a flat fee — often far less than a business class upgrade. For 2026, the smartest layovers might be in Rome, London, Hong Kong or New York.
