Vancouver Island has long traded on adrenaline — surf beaches, storm-watched coastlines, ancient rainforest. But British Columbia's biggest island also has a slower, steamier side, and a recent itinerary that hopped between its wellness spots makes a strong case for planning a whole trip around them.
The route starts in Victoria, the island's handsome capital, where HAVN offers something unusual: a floating sauna built on a refurbished naval barge in the harbour. Guests cycle through hot sauna sessions and cold plunges, scrub down with magnesium-infused salt, and can linger in an onboard cafe in a robe over turmeric elixirs while watching floatplanes land.
A few hours' drive northeast, near Comox and Courtenay, Kingfisher Pacific Resort & Spa has anchored the island's wellness scene for two decades with its underground hydrotherapy circuit of hot tubs, grotto waterfalls and rain showers. In late 2024 it added the Healing Caves — a 75-minute private sequence of sensory chambers that runs from a plumeria-scented steam room through a pink salt cave, cryotherapy with LED glacier walls, red-light therapy and a storm pool complete with simulated wind, rain, thunder and lightning. Only three of these immersive spas exist worldwide; the others are in Macau and Milan.
Crossing the island through Cathedral Grove brings you to Tofino, on the wild west coast in Clayoquot Sound — the unceded territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, whose decades-long activism protected these old-growth forests from logging. Here, the bathing gets stranger and better. Moon Jelly Bathhouse is a float home and wood-fired bathhouse moored in a secluded cove, reached by skiff: two tubs (fresh and salt water), each steeped in local kelp in the style of traditional Irish seaweed baths, plus a fire pit, showers and total privacy. Hot soak, cold plunge into the Pacific, repeat.
For something genuinely wild, book a 90-minute wildlife-watching boat trip with West Coast Aquatic Safaris to Hot Springs Cove in Maquinna Marine Provincial Park — we're talking orcas, sea otters and eagles en route — then follow a boardwalk through old-growth forest to geothermal pools fed by hot waterfalls, each step cooler as the surf moves in.
At the luxury end, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is an off-grid glamping camp reachable only by floatplane or boat, with canvas stoves, forest-canopy showers, cold plunges and a spa on the water's edge. Tofino also has more conventional options: the oceanfront Cedar Sanctuary at the Ancient Cedars Spa at Wickaninnish Inn, the seaweed-and-ocean-mud treatments at Drift Spa in Ucluelet, and Tofino Resort & Marina's Remote Floating Sauna, a 30-minute boat ride to a windowed wood-fired sauna where your only neighbours might be a seal or a bear.
It adds up to something genuinely distinctive: a wellness trip where the treatments and the wilderness blur together, and where much of the best bathing is outdoors, on the water, or straight out of the rock. Worth building a few days — or a week — around.
