Curly hair in the Gulf is a full-time job. Humidity, hard water and relentless heat can undo a decent hair day before lunch, and most online advice was written for cooler, softer climes. That's the gap Dubai Curl Festival aims to fill — the UAE's first festival built entirely around curly, coily and kinky hair, organised by the community platform Oh My Knots.
It runs on Saturday, October 10 from 10am to 6pm at Cornelia's Craft Kitchen in Al Sufouh 2, near Dubai Internet City. The day is structured around practical stuff rather than fluff: expert-led education sessions, live styling demonstrations, talks on technique, wellness sessions and interactive activations from brands that actually formulate for textured hair in desert conditions. Attendees can expect samples and goodie bags from participating hair brands across the day.
The event grew out of real demand. Oh My Knots surveyed its own community and found that 69% are actively hunting for UAE-specific product recommendations, while 77% want simpler routines built on fewer products — not another 12-step regimen. Founder Gertrud Mackenzie says the idea came from members asking for a dedicated space, noting that much of the advice circulating online simply doesn't apply to living in the Gulf. Her goal is a setting where curls are celebrated rather than framed as a problem to fix.
Families are catered for too. A dedicated kids' curl corner gives children and teens a place where curly hair types are positively represented — a nice touch for young curls who rarely see themselves reflected in mainstream beauty spaces.
Tickets are reasonably priced: Dhs150 for an adult early bird (rising to Dhs320 otherwise), Dhs50 per child aged four to 12, and a Dhs280 family pass. Booking is via the Oh My Knots channels (@ohmyknotsuae).
