Ten years after its first coach rolled into Croatia, FlixBus has turned the country into one of its key regional markets. The company has just marked a decade of operations there, with its network now covering 258 destinations across Croatia and 390 cities across the wider European network.
The numbers tell the story. When FlixBus launched in Croatia in 2016, it served just four cities with four local bus partners. Today there are 15 partners, 128 lines running to and from the country, and roughly 9,100 departures every month. Direct connections to and from Croatia have exploded from 375 in 2016 to 4,471 in 2026, and over the decade the service has carried 16.3 million passengers.
Michal Leman, Flix's Vice President for Europe East, says the anniversary is a starting point rather than a celebration endpoint. Croatia sits in the company's Europe East region, and he flags Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe as the areas with the biggest room to grow, promising more lines, stronger partnerships with local operators and better-linked markets for passengers.
The regional angle matters for travellers too. Just a year after entering Croatia, FlixBus expanded into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Slovenia in 2017, building the cross-border network that now links the Balkans with the rest of Europe. Flix sees particular potential in Southeastern Europe, where it wants to pull individual markets closer together and hook them more tightly into the wider European grid.
Why should holidaymakers care? Because getting around Croatia without a car has long been the tricky part, especially outside the peak-season coastal routes. With 258 destinations on the network, you can string together trips that budget airlines can't do: Zagreb to Plitvice, Split to Mostar, Rijeka across to Slovenia, all on one ticket system. For anyone planning a multi-country Central or Southeastern European itinerary, the growing cross-border coverage means fewer awkward gaps and transfers, and competition on popular routes tends to keep fares reasonable. Expect the network to keep growing, too, since the company has made clear it's investing further in the region.
