If your idea of a holiday splurge involves a three-Michelin-starred chef doing something you can't do anywhere else, circle the first weekend of October. Heinz Beck, the German-born chef behind Rome's celebrated La Pergola, is heading back to his namesake restaurant Gusto at the Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago for two evening events.

The first, on October 4, doubles as the launch of the restaurant's new autumn menu. Expect Beck's contemporary take on Mediterranean cooking, built around seasonal ingredients. Diners choose between seven- and nine-course tasting menus, with wine pairings available if you want the full treatment.

The second evening is the rarer of the two. On October 5, Gusto joins forces with Valrhona, the premium French chocolate house founded in the Rhône Valley in 1922, for a single dinner that treats chocolate as an ingredient across the whole menu rather than a finale. Things kick off at 7pm with a welcome reception of cocktails and canapés, followed by a seven-course tasting menu built around the collaboration. It costs €220 per person, with an optional wine pairing at €165. Both nights have limited seats, so booking ahead is essential — reservations go through Gusto on +351 289 350 700 or by email.

Gusto is the signature restaurant of the Conrad Algarve, and Beck's involvement gives it genuine star power: his flagship La Pergola in Rome has held three Michelin stars for years, making this a chance to taste that level of cooking without flying to Italy. The Valrhona dinner, meanwhile, is the kind of one-night collaboration that won't be repeated — if chocolate-forward fine dining sounds like your thing, this is the date.

Why it matters for travellers: October is arguably the sweet spot for an Algarve escape. The summer crowds thin out, the sea is still warm, and the region's restaurants shift into autumn mode. Pairing a beach break with one (or both) of these dinners turns a standard Portugal trip into something closer to a food pilgrimage. Quinta do Lago itself is an easy base — upscale but relaxed, close to Faro airport, with golf courses, nature trails and the Ria Formosa wetlands on the doorstep.

If you're pricing it up, the €220-plus-€165 dinner adds up quickly, so budget accordingly or treat it as the centrepiece of the trip and keep the rest of the week simpler. Either way, these are two evenings that put the Algarve's fine dining credentials firmly on the map this autumn.
