A war of words between Elon Musk and Delta CEO Ed Bastian has turned into a marketing windfall for Delta's biggest rivals. After Bastian reportedly told employees Delta wouldn't partner with Starlink because "we do not want to be with Elon Musk," Musk fired back on X that Bastian "will lose his job over this" — and then publicly promoted American and United, both of which have Starlink Wi-Fi deals, to Delta's frequent flyers.

United has leaned in hard with a "Switch To Better Wi-Fi" status match, open to eligible US residents holding Delta (or American) status through October 15, 2026. Approved applicants get 90 days of matched status and must hit a spending target to keep it through January 2028: $1,500 for Silver Medallion/level equivalent up to $7,000 for Diamond Medallion or Executive Platinum, earned on United or United Express fares (base fares and surcharges count; taxes, upgrades and Economy Plus don't). United says it accepts lifetime status but not promotional tiers, and replies within three business days. Challengers at the Platinum and 1K levels also receive PlusPoints or bonus credits on success.

American's offer runs through its Instant Status Pass, granting four months of matched status — Silver Medallion holders map to Gold, Gold to Platinum, Platinum to Platinum Pro, and Diamond Medallion to Executive Platinum. Retention requires hitting Loyalty Point targets across three consecutive four-month phases (13,000 up to 67,000). The catch: your Delta status must expire in January 2028, and matched, transferred or promotional status is excluded. Expect a paperwork slog, too — screenshots required, and responses can take weeks.

The Wi-Fi backdrop matters. American doesn't start installing Starlink until early 2027, beginning with over 500 Airbus narrowbodies, though there are hints Boeing jets could follow. United claims Starlink is already live on more than 560 aircraft, with the fleet rollout finishing before the end of 2027. Delta, meanwhile, is betting on Amazon's Leo service, slated for an initial 500 aircraft from 2028 — still unproven and not yet in beta.

Sceptics say Delta's hub structure keeps customers captive, and there's truth to that if you live in Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City. But Delta competes hard in Boston and Seattle, and plenty of flyers in non-hub cities can connect through more than one airline's hub. For road warriors who work in the air, hours of usable onboard internet can outweigh a fare difference — and United saw match requests spike after Delta's controversial 2023 SkyMiles overhaul. Even partial defections — shifting a few pricey trips or a credit card — can sting an airline's margins. The pitch is really aimed at people whose status makes them valuable: which is exactly why both rivals want them to switch now.
