A long-haul flight is one of the last places you're allowed to do absolutely nothing for six-plus hours — and according to the team at Condé Nast Traveller UK, that makes it the perfect setting for the films you never get around to at home. They've picked seven favourites, all hefty enough to eat up a serious chunk of flight time.
The list is heavy on epics, and for good reason. Titanic (3h 14m) gets a vote as the ultimate cosy-in-the-cabin watch, while The Green Mile (3h 9m) comes with an explicit tissues warning — apparently emotions run even higher at altitude. For old-school Hollywood spectacle, Cleopatra is the longest pick at just over four hours, with Elizabeth Taylor's 65 costume changes (including a 24-carat gold cloth cape) doing a lot to distract from a middle seat.
More recent cinema makes the cut too. Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon (3h 26m) is flagged as a slower, more demanding film than his usual gangster fare — the true story of the murders of Osage Nation members in 1920s Oklahoma, with Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro — but engrossing enough that the hours vanish. Gone with the Wind (3h 50m) gets the nod as a famously slow-burning classic best watched when you genuinely have no reason to leave your seat.
There are two smart strategies for the really long hauls. Flying to New Zealand? One editor watched all three Lord of the Rings films on the way to Hobbiton — the trilogy runs nine hours 17 minutes back to back, longer with the extended cuts. Or go the other way with Richard Linklater's Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight), which follows Jesse and Céline from a chance meeting on a train to Vienna across nearly two decades. All three total just under five hours, leaving time for a nap and, according to the recommendation, arriving feeling ready for a holiday romance of your own.
Why it matters: if you've ever boarded a long flight with vague plans to "be productive", this is permission to give up on that. The best in-flight films are the ones too long or too demanding for a normal evening on the sofa — and a ten-hour flight is exactly the commitment they deserve.
