Saudi Arabia's Red Sea giga-project has its first hotel. The Red Sea Edition, Marriott's design-led luxury brand, has opened on Shura Island, the hub of the Kingdom's ambitious regenerative tourism development on the country's west coast.

The 240-key resort, which includes 53 suites, was designed by Rockwell Group within a masterplan by Foster + Partners. The buildings stay deliberately low-rise, topped with shell-inspired roofs so they sit lightly on the island, and were prefabricated offsite before assembly on location to limit disruption to fragile coastal ecosystems. The wider island plan even uses the buildings as natural erosion defences while creating new habitats around them.

The design story runs from rock to sand to sea. Interiors lean on coral stone, rammed earth, natural oak and woven textures rather than obvious regional artwork or clichés. Rooms follow a 'sand grain' concept with residential feels, while the biggest suites tuck under their own clamshell roofs for privacy. The lobby channels sculptural dunes, leading out to beachfront venues Jiwa Terrace and Jiwa Beach Club, where a timber canopy with hanging reeds softens the edge between terrace and sand.

The centrepiece is The Recovery Dome, an architectural space devoted to movement, mindfulness and restoration, framed by island views and running a programme of wellness experiences. It sits alongside The Spa and The Gym, both designed as calm counters to the destination's more adventure-led activities.

For travellers, this is the first proper look at what Shura Island will become. It's one of the flagship projects of Red Sea Global, the developer behind a string of high-end openings along Saudi Arabia's coastline, with brands like Equinox also signed on for the nearby Amaala development. If you've been curious about the Red Sea destination but wary of unfinished resorts, this marks the moment the island actually has somewhere to stay. It suits design-minded luxury travellers and wellness-focused guests more than budget backpackers — expect Edition pricing to match the brand's global portfolio.
