One of New Zealand's Great Walks is running a little late this summer. The Tongariro Northern Circuit — the 40-odd-kilometre loop that wraps around Mount Ngauruhoe in the central North Island — will now fully open as a circuit in mid-December, later than usual, after a string of setbacks hit the Department of Conservation's rebuild work.
Two things went wrong. First, fires late in 2025 damaged the Mangatepopo Track, a key stretch linking Whakapapa Village with Mangatepopo Hut. Repairs on that section are moving along, but then poor weather grounded the helicopters meant to fly building materials into the site of the new Oturere Hut. Construction stalled, and DOC has pushed the hut's opening back accordingly. Bookings for Oturere Hut and its campsite now open for stays from 18 December.
It's a blow for trampers who had already secured bunks in the brand-new hut, and DOC principal ranger Jenny Hayward acknowledged the disappointment. The silver lining, she pointed out, is that anyone booking from mid-December onward gets the full experience: Oturere will be a proper stop on the complete Great Walk circuit rather than a detour or an awkward out-and-back.
There's more long-term good news too. The Mangatepopo Track isn't just being patched — it will eventually get a full refresh, with a metalled (gravelled) surface and new boardwalk sections. That should make one of the circuit's most exposed and heavily used stretches more comfortable and more resilient in future.
The Northern Circuit is a three-to-four-day loop that takes in volcanic terrain, emerald lakes and the surreal Red Crater skyline that made the Tongariro Alpine Crossing famous — but with far fewer people once you get past the day-walkers. Oturere Hut sits on the drier eastern side of the circuit, known for its lava-flow scenery and wide open views. If you were hoping for an early-summer start date, you'll need to shift plans back a couple of weeks, or book alternative accommodation around Whakapapa Village and do sections of the track until the loop is whole again. Great Walk huts book out fast in peak season, so once those 18 December slots go live, moving quickly is wise.
