Zagreb has a new culinary calling card. BioMania Bistro, a fully plant-based and organic restaurant in the Croatian capital, has made Tripadvisor's Travellers' Choice Best of the Best list for 2026, ranking among the top ten vegan and vegetarian restaurants on the planet. That's a striking result for a place that opened less than two years ago.
The Best of the Best tag isn't handed out lightly. Fewer than 1% of the more than five million restaurants listed on Tripadvisor make the cut, and the ranking comes from the volume and quality of reviews by actual diners rather than a jury's opinion. BioMania currently sits at 4.9 out of 5, built on over a thousand reviews. Its category peers this year are spread across Peru, Greece, Vietnam, Canada, Scotland, the United States and the Czech Republic.
Founder Dario Kožul credits the small organic and biodynamic producers who supply the fruit, vegetables and herbs, along with a menu that is largely gluten-free as well as vegan. The bistro is the year-round sibling of a seasonal outpost in Bol, on the island of Brač. Since opening, the Zagreb restaurant has served more than 40,000 guests, and interestingly over 70% of them are locals rather than tourists.
Perhaps the most telling number: more than 80% of diners describe themselves as omnivores. This isn't a niche spot tolerating curious herbivores — it's pulling in people who simply think the food is worth the trip. That's usually the best sign a restaurant is doing something right.
For travellers, Zagreb rarely tops Croatia itineraries the way Dubrovnik or Split do, but this gives the capital a food reason of its own. Pair a meal at BioMania with the city's café culture, the Upper Town and the Dolac market, and you have a compelling city-break excuse — ideally before word spreads further and booking a table gets harder.
