American Airlines has started rolling out a cash and miles option for AAdvantage members, letting you book flights using a mix of money and points rather than choosing one or the other. The feature is appearing on aa.com and in the airline's app over the coming weeks.
There are limits at launch, though. It's initially only available to members whose accounts are registered in the US, and only for domestic flights on American-operated routes — Alaska and Hawaii are excluded for now. The booking flow is straightforward: you search for flights as a normal cash purchase, then at checkout a slider appears showing different combinations of miles and cash, and the price updates as you adjust the balance. Members with small mile balances — say 5,000 or 10,000 miles that would never cover a full award ticket — can now put them toward shaving a bit off a fare.
That convenience comes with a familiar trade-off. All of the other big US carriers — Delta, United and Southwest — already offer cash-plus-points redemptions, and in every case the value you get per point is modest. American hasn't disclosed whether the rate will be fixed or variable, or what cents-per-mile value members should expect, so the early weeks of the rollout will be revealing. Based on how the other programs work, expect roughly one cent per mile at best, and possibly noticeably less.
One open question is whether American will sweeten the deal for holders of its co-branded credit cards, for example with a better redemption rate. There's no sign of that yet, and even if it materialises, the maths probably won't change dramatically.
For travellers, the takeaway is simple: this is a tidy way to stop small mile balances from gathering dust, not a route to outsized value. If you're sitting on a few thousand AAdvantage miles you're unlikely to top up, using them here could knock real money off a domestic fare. But if you're chasing maximum value from your miles, traditional award redemptions — especially on international premium cabins — will almost certainly beat cash and miles every time. The feature is worth knowing about, and worth checking the actual rate on your next booking before you slide anything anywhere.
