After a sold-out debut season, Celebrity Xcel will return to the Mediterranean for a full 2027 European program — and it won't be sailing alone. From August 2027, Celebrity enters the river cruise market for the first time, meaning travellers could soon pair a big-ship Med voyage with a slow glide down the Rhine or Danube in a single trip.

The Xcel's hook is that it was partly designed by passengers themselves. Through the brand's 'Dream Makers' program, guest feedback shaped everything from dining to entertainment. The clearest result is The Bazaar, a new onboard space that shifts its food and cultural programming to match whichever port the ship has just left — so a day in Santorini doesn't end at the gangway.

The 2027 itineraries cover a lot of ground. One seven-nighter runs from Barcelona to Athens via Sicily, Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos; another pairs Malta with the Greek islands before finishing in Athens. Elsewhere, calls include Portofino, Florence and Naples, plus stops along the French Riviera.

Onboard, the ship leans into its premium positioning. Infinite Veranda staterooms open to the sea air, AquaClass guests get the exclusive Blu restaurant and SEA Thermal Suite, and the spa offers more than 120 treatments. Suite guests have The Retreat — private sun deck, dedicated butler and the Luminae restaurant. Food-wise, specialty options run from dry-aged steak and fresh pasta to sushi and Daniel Boulud's fine-dining venue Le Voyage.

The river side of the equation is the genuinely new chapter. Celebrity River Cruises launches with purpose-built ships such as the Celebrity Compass, designed around panoramic windows and open-air decks. Early itineraries stretch from spring tulip season through to Christmas market sailings, covering the Rhine and Danube. Combined with the ocean program, that opens up the option of a back-to-back European summer: a week among the Greek islands, then a week drifting past castles and vineyards.

There's a booking window worth knowing about. Celebrity's Spring Sale and Europe Earlybird deal, running until 23 September, includes up to 75 percent off the second guest's fare, up to $1,200 in savings per room, and up to $600 off select 2027 European sailings. After 23 September, the second-guest discount and bonus savings on select dates continue.
