Skip the airport this autumn. Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, spread across 6,800 acres overlooking Lake Galena in northwest Illinois, is pitching itself as a drive-to alternative for travellers wanting fall colour and winter quiet without a flight. It sits in the Driftless Region, the patch of the Midwest the Ice Age glaciers never flattened, which explains the steep ridges, wooded valleys and views that feel oddly un-Midwestern.
Getting there is easy from a big chunk of the country: about 150 miles west of Chicago, with straightforward drives from Madison, Milwaukee, Dubuque, Rockford and the Quad Cities, and a doable road trip from St. Louis.
Golf is the headline activity — 63 holes across four championship courses, including The General, famous for its elevation changes — but there's also hiking, horseback riding, lake time and the Stonedrift Spa. Winter shifts things indoors and onto the snow: the Nordic Center turns the area around The General's 10th hole into a sledding hill, plus skating and snowshoeing, and a golf simulator keeps players sharp until spring.
The food side has had a refresh. New executive chef Brandon Veitch, who came on board in June after stints at The Peninsula Chicago, The Langham Chicago and Galena's Edge by Goldmoor Inn, has rolled out new dinner menus at Woodlands Restaurant — think Lobster Cavatappi, Alaskan Halibut and Prime New York Strip — alongside long-running traditions like Thursday Pasta Night and Saturday Prime Rib Night.
The resort has also built a calendar of package weekends. A Spooky Weekend Getaway (Oct. 22-25, 2026) starts at $573 and bundles two nights with tickets and transport to the Fear Forest nighttime walk at the Shenandoah Riding Center. The Thanksgiving Getaway (Nov. 24-28) starts at $612 plus tax and resort fee, with three nights and a family pizza night, and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner available. Over the holidays, a Family Holiday Package runs Dec. 26-Jan. 2 with three nights and free Nordic Center access including sled rentals.
Nearby historic Galena adds its own pull. The fall calendar includes Oktoberfest at Depot Park on Oct. 3, the Galena Country Fair with more than 120 vendors on Oct. 10-11, a Halloween parade down Main Street on Oct. 31, and Galena Cellars' Nouveau Wine Weekend on Nov. 20-21. December brings the Holidaze Festival with fireworks on Dec. 5 and the Night of the Luminaria on Dec. 12, when thousands of candles light up downtown.
Accommodation runs from standard inn rooms up to five-bedroom homes, so the resort works equally for a couples' spa weekend or a big family holiday gathering. For anyone in the Midwest after a low-effort break with real scenery, it's an easy sell — just get in the car.
