Ontario International Airport (ONT), east of Los Angeles in San Bernardino County, handled close to 4.7 million passengers across the first eight months of 2026 — a modest 0.3% rise overall, but with one standout figure: international traffic surged 31%, with more than 450,000 travellers flying overseas or across borders from ONT in that period.

The international growth is being driven by expanded service to Taiwan and Mexico, giving Inland Empire residents a genuine alternative to the traffic-choked drive into Los Angeles for long-haul trips. Airport officials are leaning into that momentum. Atif Elkadi, chief executive of the Ontario International Airport Authority, credited the airport's convenience, facilities and customer service rankings among North American airports for pulling travellers away from the bigger coastal hubs.

It hasn't been uniformly smooth flying. August alone saw around 606,000 passengers pass through ONT, down 6.2% from August 2025. The dip came as airlines trimmed capacity in response to higher fuel prices rather than any fall in demand — a reminder that even at growing airports, route networks can shrink or expand with little warning. Travellers with flexible dates may find better schedules and fares in quieter months when carriers are keener to fill seats.

So why should this matter if you're planning a trip to or from Southern California? Ontologically simple: ONT is smaller, easier and often cheaper than LAX. Security lines are shorter, parking is closer to the terminals, and domestic carriers plus the growing international routes mean you may not need the big airport at all.
