That's exactly why it can be a smart time to book: flights and hotels dip in price, kids are back at school, and a surprising number of places are still properly warm. For an easy city break, Seville tops most lists. Continental Europe's hottest city cools to an average of 21C in October, with daily highs around 27C — ideal sightseeing weather rather than the furnace of August. The Moorish palaces, the Gothic cathedral and the Plaza de España are all far more enjoyable without the swelter.
Valletta is another strong European bet, averaging 24C and seven hours of daily sun.
