Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama has unveiled a batch of new and returning flights into Cancun International Airport for the coming winter, adding both fresh routes from the US and Canada and a couple of new domestic links. For anyone weighing up a Mexican Caribbean break this season, the short version: it is about to get easier and cheaper to get there from several secondary cities that previously had no direct option.
The headline newbies come from Porter Airlines, which starts flying Halifax to Cancun on December 18 with three weekly flights, and Air Transat, launching Windsor to Cancun on December 19 as a weekly service. Breeze Airways adds a Tampa route the same day, twice weekly.
Breeze then builds out in January 2027 with two more US routes: Pittsburgh from January 7 (three flights a week) and Richmond from January 8 (two weekly). The Richmond link is notable as a revival — that connection had been suspended for more than a decade.
Canada gets a serious winter restore, too. Air Canada brings back Calgary-Cancun on December 11 with four weekly flights. On December 16, Air Transat relaunches Fredericton-Cancun weekly, and Flair Airlines resumes both Edmonton and Montreal with three weekly flights each. A day later, Flair also returns to Calgary with four flights per week.
Domestic travellers get new options as well: Viva Aerobus links Acapulco and Cancun from November 3, twice weekly, while Volaris starts Cancun-Los Cabos in December with three weekly flights. The state government frames the expansion as a vote of confidence from airlines in the Mexican Caribbean, and practically it means more competition on seats — usually good news for fares, especially from smaller Canadian and US cities where nonstop flights to Cancun have been rare.
If you are in Halifax, Windsor, Tampa, Pittsburgh or Richmond and Cancun has always meant a connection through a hub, this winter you can fly nonstop. Book early for the December launch dates; first-week flights on new leisure routes tend to sell through fast, and Canadian demand for Cancun in January and February is reliably heavy.
