Stuck between two of Wisconsin's biggest cities, there's a small village that makes a surprisingly good excuse to hit the road. Fox Crossing, home to just under 20,000 people in Winnebago County, sits about 40 minutes from Green Bay along I-41 and under two hours from Madison — well within range of a one-day getaway from either city.
Getting there is simple. If you're coming from further away, Appleton International Airport is only about four miles (an eight-minute drive) from the village, and Valley Transit buses link Fox Crossing with Appleton, Grand Chute and nearby hubs if you'd rather not drive. Locals describe it as a safe, upscale pocket that happens to sit at the junction of several transport corridors.
Food is a big part of the appeal. Town Council Kitchen and Bar, a local fixture since 2016, mixes New American cooking with French technique and seasonal local ingredients — think chilaquiles or tiramisu French toast at Saturday brunch, pork chops or vegetable curry at dinner. The weekly Cheeseburger Thursday special has a following, and reviewers consistently praise the service and atmosphere. Carnivores should head instead to Wissota Chophouse, a relaxed steakhouse serving high-quality Angus cuts like ribeye, a Wagyu burger, and shareable plates ranging from steak flatbread to buffalo fried alligator.
If you want to walk off lunch, the Loop the Little Lake Trail — known locally as "the Loop" — is a 3.5-mile paved route connecting Fox Crossing with Neenah and Menasha across Little Lake Butte des Morts. It combines sidewalks, bike lanes, trestles and off-road segments, and grew out of a 1990s railroad trestle before the full circuit was completed in 2018. It's flat, kid-friendly and good for walking, running or cycling. Start at the Fritse Park trailhead, which has restrooms and a playground.
Shoppers have options too, mostly in the neighbouring towns. Red Door Mercantile in Neenah's historic downtown, less than 10 minutes away, sells gifty, hard-to-find items and gets strong marks for its staff, especially around the holidays. For mainstream retail, Fox River Mall is about eight minutes away, with Lululemon, H&M, American Eagle and more.
For travellers road-tripping through eastern Wisconsin, Fox Crossing works because it packs trails, a real food scene and shopping into one compact, low-effort stop. It's not a destination you'd cross an ocean for, but as a day trip break between Green Bay and Madison — or a relaxed afternoon from Appleton — it's an easy win.
