A quiet limestone entrance on 48th Street, a backlit window with closed drapery, a fireplace in the foyer. That's how The Nell New York plans to greet its guests — a deliberate contrast to the hustle of Rockefeller Centre, where the 134-room hotel opens in Autumn 2027 at 10 Rockefeller Plaza.
The project, just revealed by Aspen Hospitality, is a big deal for two reasons. It will be the only hotel inside Rockefeller Centre, and it will be New York City's only Relais & Châteaux property. The brand itself comes from Aspen: Nell Hotels builds on the legacy of The Little Nell, Colorado's storied ski-in ski-out luxury hotel.
Two New York studios have split the design work. Rockwell Group handled the public spaces — arrival, reception, the seventh-floor dining and social hub, a wine lounge and cellar, spa, gym and meeting rooms — while Pierre & Co designed the guestrooms and suites. The concept running through it all is a grand Manhattan townhouse rather than a conventional hotel, with Art Deco echoes borrowed from Rockefeller Centre itself: geometric stone inlays, bronze, warm woods, plaster and custom lighting.
The layout works vertically. Ground floor: that residential-style entrance. The seventh floor: reception, lounges and dining arranged as connected rooms, with an intimate bar overlooking the famous ice rink, its amber stone, marble and textured glass pairing with curated artwork. The eighth floor: a spa in warm wood and natural stone, plus a fitness centre with big windows and antique mirrored walls that reads more like a private gym than a hotel amenity.
Upstairs, Pierre & Co has kept things restrained — clean lines, softened curves, warm neutrals and natural materials — with one theatrical nod: a soft persimmon accent drawn from the curtains of Radio City Music Hall, just around the corner. The Presidential Suite goes deeper with burgundy tones, rich stone and a bathroom of curved marble walls.
Why should a traveller care? Midtown has plenty of big-box luxury hotels, but few places that feel residential, and none that sit inside an Art Deco landmark steps from St Patrick's Cathedral, MoMA and Fifth Avenue shopping. If the Nell name and the Relais & Châteaux badge mean anything, expect a small, service-heavy property aimed at travellers who prefer intimacy over sprawl. Bookings won't open for a while yet, but this is one to put on the 2027 radar — especially if your New York trips lean towards culture and quiet evenings rather than rooftop chaos.
