Autumn in Ontario doesn't have to mean staying in. Within two hours of Toronto there's a solid roster of small towns, conservation areas and provincial parks worth a spontaneous day trip, and a recent round-up by Curiocity pulls the best of them into one list.
The small-town options lean heavily on heritage and food. Ancaster, dating to the late 1700s and once Canada's largest industrial centre, keeps its historic main strip and the much-loved Ancaster Mill restaurant, with Dundas and its valley of shops and cafes just next door. Caledon, technically a cluster of rural villages like Alton, Belfountain and Inglewood, claims 21 so-called ghost hamlets — remnants of communities that faded away. Collingwood sits on Georgian Bay with a growing craft brewery scene and Blue Mountain resort minutes away. St. Jacobs offers something different again: Canada's largest Old Order Mennonite population, horse-and-buggies on local roads, and the country's biggest year-round farmers' market.
For scenery, Northumberland County's driving routes deliver rolling hills and fall colour, including the Alnwick-Haldimand route through Shelter Valley and a Rice Lake stretch where orange leaves reflect off the water. And if you want the day trip to feel like a real escape, take the Frontenac II ferry from Millhaven to Amherst Island, whose hamlet of Stella was once named one of Canada's prettiest towns by Harrowsmith Country Life magazine.
Closer to the city, the parks do the heavy lifting. Bronte Creek in Oakville has trails and the 1880s-era Spruce Lane Farmhouse. Dundas Valley Conservation Area — about an hour from Toronto — covers 1,200 hectares of forest, waterfalls and lookouts. Forks of the Credit, technically in the GTA but a world away on the Bruce Trail, is popular for hiking and its waterfall. Kelso Conservation Area in Milton adds a sandy lakeshore and boardwalk around a reservoir originally built to control flooding on Sixteen Mile Creek.
Why it matters: these are all doable in a single day without much planning — a tank of gas, decent shoes and a free Saturday. Leaf season is short, so the window to catch the colour at its peak is roughly late September through October.
